Cuba was one of the greatest importers of American cars in the first half of the 20th Century, and by 1955 they numbered over one hundred and fifty five thousand. In January 1959 Fidel Castro’s victorious revolutionary army took control of Cuba. Over the next eighteen months, his government’s actions would see an end to the fabulous era of American cars.

Cuba’s complex, colorful history is again being rewritten. After half a century of isolation and hardship, the recent shift in relations with the world and in particular the USA, is precipitating a transformation across this unique Caribbean nation. More freedom of communications, travel, commerce and investment is altering the very fabric of the country. The living museum of ancient cars, horses and carts, manual labour, decaying buildings and neglected infrastructure is changing. Kim Buddee's striking photographs capture the island and its people emerging from their tragic yet enchanting time capsule. This visual tour of contemporary Cuba is interwoven with the captivating story of its five hundred year evolution from Columbus to Castro and beyond.

An historic transformation is happening in Myanmar, once was Burma. The country is emerging from its isolation and finally joining the 21st Century in what has been described as “the Burmese spring.” This revolution is being felt most particularly in the former capital Yangon, once was Rangoon. There is at last the prospect of an end to decades of neglect and decay. However this brave new world spells uncertainty for the future of not only the unique collection of colonial heritage buildings that have miraculously survived, but also for other aspects of a the city where the national costume is worn by most of the population, the women and children have a creamy paste called “thanaka” smeared on their faces and the world’s oldest buses converted from World War Two army trucks are still in service.
These new images capture that moment in time...
...before everything changes.
Words and photographs by Kim Buddee, once was an architect.
